A Very Fast 0 problem installation was finished of as a brease,it detected almost all devices correctly, It also provides support to old cannon BJC 1000 printer which i am using for personal purpose. Performance of most commonly used applications can be given 9 out of 10 when compared with other linux distros. The 10.1 system is comparetively faster with good 3d rendering(Xgl).
Hardware configuration:
VIA Chipset board with with P4, 256MB DDR,with dual harddisks seagate 20 GB/40 GB.
I got opensuse 10.1. in DVD with a magazine together with other softwares, so I had to burn the cds before I could use it. had some problems configuring the display as well, which i had to configure manually even though it had detected the AGP device correctly.I was replacing fedora core 5 downloaded from fedora website.
The everyday applications of end users from Text editor Kate to openoffice is notably fast and smooth . When compared to any linux OS it is best of breed.I had some problem in connecting to internet with DSL modem, here i had to ping to the DSL modem to get connected.
I am also running Postgresql Database, Apache web server,DNS,DHCP server from the same machine, It continues to be responsive even though loading MS office takes a minute or two.I upgraded firfox to the latest firefox version, due to a red security alert update.
When compared to the previous release of opensuse10.0, which was replaced with fedora core 5.0 after just 2 days of use, due to frequent crashes, this is almost industrial quality solution from novel, you may be tempted to compare the system with debian for the stablility it shows on all front.
Firewall configuration is much easier than in fedora where you have to manually script the whole thing from scratch due to inefficient firewall script provided, Suse's script is good for most purpose and easy to configure, The readability of the firewall config file SuSEfirewall2, requires special mention.
The cd burning issue was overcome by force mounting cdrecorder in readwrite mode to get results. The configuration tool for virtualisation server software ZEN that comes with opensuse10.1 is still geekonly, which i tried without much success.
Overall Rating for the software is 9 out of 10 for general public and 7 out of 10 for advanced users mainly due to the problems with ZEN which is expected to take over the Virtual server scenario. With some more effort suse 10.2 which will be released by the end of the year 2006 will be a good competitor to Windows vesta which is due to release in first week of December 2006.
